Heating Oil Prices Rise in Shropshire

Heating oil users in Shropshire are facing a fuel or food choice as ministers tighten up rules on heating oil and promote competition.

Ministers said they would review minimum order levels for some customers, set for some households to buy at least 500 litres per year, to help reduce costs.

Heating oil prices in Shropshire have risen significantly since the start of the Iran war, with many households facing higher costs due to increased demand and reduced supply.

The current price for heating oil is around £550 per 500 litres, which is nearly double what it was last year. This increase has left some households struggling to afford their fuel needs.

Ministers have announced plans to review minimum order levels for customers who buy at least 500 litres per year and promote competition in the market.

The move comes as campaigners call for a cap on heating oil prices, similar to those on mains gas and electricity tariffs in England, Scotland, and Wales. They argue that this would help protect consumers from price volatility and ensure fair compensation routes if things go wrong.

According to Shropshire Council, about 15 per cent of households in its area rely on oil-fuelled central heating, which is between 16,000 and 21,000 properties. However, there are large variations within the county, with some areas having much higher percentages of homes without mains gas.

Co-operatives have formed to bulk buy heating oil at cheaper prices, including one set up by the charity Community Resource. These co-ops help reduce costs for households and provide a more stable supply of fuel.

The government's move has been welcomed by campaigners, but some argue that it does not go far enough. They call for an immediate cut to VAT on heating oil and LPG to address the fundamental problem facing 1. 7 million UK households who are off the gas grid, mostly in rural areas.

For those households nearing the end of their current supply, the high price of heating oil adds hundreds of pounds to their bills due to the need for bulk purchases. This has led some families to take a gamble on whether they can afford to buy more fuel or risk rationing their supplies.

The government's announcement is seen as a step in the right direction, but campaigners argue that it does not address the root cause of the problem and may exacerbate existing issues. They are calling for a more comprehensive solution to protect consumers and ensure fair competition in the heating oil market.

As the situation continues to unfold, households in Shropshire will need to weigh their options carefully. With prices continuing to rise, it is essential to do your research and find reliable suppliers who can provide you with affordable fuel while also ensuring that you are protected from price volatility.

For those struggling to afford heating oil, there may be external support available. Campaign groups such as Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) offer assistance and
