Civilians were mistakenly bombed in Nigeria
Civilians were mistakenly killed in an airstrike targeting bandits in Nigeria.
Civilians were accidentally killed in an airstrike targeting criminal gangs in northwestern Nigeria, according to reports from officials and locals.
In a statement, the spokesman for the Zamfara state governor said the Nigerian Air Force over the weekend targeted so-called bandits in Maradun and Zarmi local government areas, who carry out killings and mass kidnappings of villagers.
Suleiman Bala Idris said that regrettably, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and locals were affected during the operation in Tanger Kara.
He added that members of local self-defense groups were identified as "bandits who had mistakenly escaped" from the Zarmi area.
Authorities have not provided an exact death toll, but the Associated Press news agency quoted resident Salisu Maradon as saying he counted 20 bodies while 10 other injured people were being treated.
