Probe begins into why cargo plane overran Miami runway

On Sunday, a cargo plane carrying Amazon goods overshot the runway at Miami International Airport in a deadly incident.

The Boeing 767-300 aircraft, operated by 21 Air, crashed just before 14:00 (18:00 GMT) with five people killed and five others injured.

None of the victims were on board when the plane overshot the runway. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The incident occurred during one of the busiest travel weekends in the US, with over 200 firefighters responding to the scene and several flights grounded.

Locals described the aftermath as chaotic, with some reporting a black cloud where the plane had crashed and an acrid stench.

The Amazon cargo flight was travelling at 112 knots (129mph, 207km/h) as it exited the 'useable runway'. According to FlightRadar24, the plane came to rest near a car park that serves an Amazon warehouse and other businesses.

Experts who spoke to the Associated Press news agency said video footage of the plane's landing would present investigators with the question of whether or not the aircraft touched down within its designated zone on the runway - and if so, what happened.

The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) said there would be 17 million travellers passing through US airports in the week leading up to Monday's Labor Day holiday.

The incident comes during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year in the US.

Locals have described the aftermath of the incident. One woman, Beth Tilman, told the New York Times she had seen a black cloud where the plane had crashed, and had smelled an acrid stench.
