AI Superpower Ambitions

The US and China are locked in a race to develop AI, with the US leading in frontier models but China gaining ground on open weight models.

China's foreign ministry warned that 'narratives of threat' and confrontation hinder global AI governance, calling for cooperation to ensure it benefits all.

The two countries have previously cooperated on existential threats such as nuclear weapons, but that was based on a shared understanding of the threat, which is not currently the case with AI.

US officials and AI firms have alleged that Chinese developers closed the gap by using distillation, while some in the industry have warned that AI could pose an existential risk to humanity.
