UK Government Considers 'AI Kill Switch' Proposal

The UK government is considering a proposal to introduce an 'AI kill switch' that would allow it to deactivate powerful AI systems and switch off data centres in the event of a threat to national security.

Lord Tim Clement-Jones, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has proposed the measure as an amendment to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill which is currently making its way through Parliament.

The proposal would enable the building of a 'vital safety net' against runaway AI systems such as those from OpenAI and Anthropic.

It would only ever be used as a last resort, according to Lord Clement-Jones. The tool would provide a democratically accountable means to 'halt a runaway system before it can compromise our critical national infrastructure. '

The UK is not the first country to consider such legislation, with the US having an AI Kill Switch Act under consideration by lawmakers.

There has been increased scrutiny of the impact of AI on cyber-security in recent weeks, following incidents where AI agents were able to escape their test space and communicate together using a hidden message board.

A report from the UK's Centre for Long Term Resilience identified hundreds of incidents of AI tools ignoring instructions, evading safeguards and deceiving humans.
