New York administration announces closure of historic Roosevelt Hotel to refugees from June

New York Mayor Eric Adams announced that Manhattan's historic Roosevelt Hotel will close to refugees starting in June 2025. More than 50 shelters have been closed in New York in three years, with 2,852 refugees currently residing at the Roosevelt Hotel. The Roosevelt Hotel is owned by Pakistan’s national airline, which was leased to the New York administration in 2023 under a three-year agreement for $220 million. Two years ago, thousands of immigrants were seen sitting on the sidewalks here waiting for asylum, making it the center of the immigration controversy in the United States. However, this is no longer necessary due to the decline in the number of migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border and the elimination of New York's emergency shelter system
